platanus hispanica. The London plane, or sometimes hybrid plane, Platanus × hispanica, [2] is a tree in the genus Platanus. It is often known by the synonym Platanus × acerifolia, a later name. It is a hybrid of Platanus orientalis (oriental plane) and Platanus occidentalis (American sycamore). Platanus × hispanica 'Media' remains the dominant tree within inner London. The type species of the genus is the Oriental plane Platanus orientalis.
